Unable to Download

When trying to download a file, have you been getting this error message:
"C:\Windows\Temp\xxxxx.xxx could not be saved because the source file could not be read"?

Did you install OVER the previous version of Netscape or Mozilla, without UNinstalling via Control-panel | Add/Remove first? Most problems with Netscape 7.1 stem from installing over, rather than uninstalling via the Add/Remove Programs applet. Netscape 7.1 files are not compatible with older versions, therefore problems arise when you don't uninstall the existing version properly. Uninstalling via Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs applet will not touch your profile data.

However, if this is not the case, then try the below listed workarounds:

Close Netscape, including Quick Launch:
Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\components folder:

Delete: compreg.dat (or rename)

Navigate to the salted (*.slt) folder
Profile Folder Location

Delete: downloads.rdf (or rename)
Delete: mimeTypes.rdf (or rename)

Delete: history.dat
Delete: XUL.mfl
Delete: Cache folder

(The last three items are general maintenance, and should be deleted on a regular basis.)

If you still are unable to download, then it may be necessary to uninstall Netscape, and Mozilla, if it is installed, and follow this procedure:

After uninstalling Netscape and or Mozilla thru Add/Remove, check here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE
If the GRE folder exists delete the folder.

ONLY if you're comfortable editing the Registry, delete these keys:
Backup the Registry before editing...

Run regedit and search for all references to Mozilla, mozilla.org, and Netscape.
Delete all references to either program, including the Program folders:
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape
C:\Program Files\mozilla.org
Remember to back up your plugins folder before deleting the Program folders.

Feedback from users give positive results from deleting the compreg.dat file, but have reported that it is not a long term fix, and has to be repeated intermittently. For a permanent fix, upgrade to Mozilla 1.5.
