As an example, I'm using the comm.jar file located here:
First and most importantly, always back up the file you intend to edit before making any changes to the file.
Copy the comm.jar file to a temporary folder for editing
I have an "Edit" folder which I created for this purpose
Change the name of comm.jar to comm.jar.zip
Open the file with your unzip program.
For the sake of example I will use WinZip
Right click the renamed file, and select: "Extract
(or whatever you named your file for this edit)
In the C:\Edit folder you will see a "content" folder which contains one or more subfolders.
The subfolder(s) contain the file which you will edit.
Open the file in WordPad, and make the edit.
Once you have made the edit, save the edited file.
Highlight the "content" folder
Right click, and select: Add to zip
in the "Add to archive:" field
Click on the Add tab
The edited file has now been repacked, and you are ready to replace the existing comm.jar file with the comm.jar.zip.
Open the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\chrome folder
Or the C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\chrome folder
Rename the existing comm.jar file to oldcomm.jar
Now copy the comm.jar.zip file to the chrome folder
Rename comm.jar.zip to: comm.jar
